What the calculator computes

The calculator computes the theoretical weight of rolled metal and blanks of other materials: the weight of 1 metre (for sheet, 1 m²), the weight of a blank of a given length or size, the total weight of several pieces and how many pieces make up one tonne.

Materials: carbon and alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium and duralumin, copper, brass, bronze, titanium, as well as plastics (cast nylon, polyethylene, polypropylene, PTFE) and technical rubber. The density of each grade is taken from the reference book and shown in the form.

Shapes: sheet, flat bar, round bar, square bar, hexagon bar, pipe, profile pipe (square and rectangular), angle, channel and I-beam; a cross-section drawing with dimensions is shown for each shape. For the selected material only the shapes that exist for it are offered: for example, rubber has no channel, I-beam or angle. The mass of channels and I-beams is taken from the table of standard sections (GOST 8240-97, GOST 8239-89) by section number.

This is the theoretical weight: it ignores rolling tolerances, radii and chamfers. The actual weight may differ within the tolerances; for an angle the formula error is 1–3 %.

The calculations are approximate: they help to assess the process and compare options, but do not replace a process design and trials on a specific raw material. This section is for reference only and contains no commercial offers.
